Your move will be easier and
run smoother if you pre-plan. Here are several tips to get started.
- Create an inventory of everything you will be
moving to your new address.
- Take photographs or videos of valuables or
unusual items.
- Note serial numbers on your electronic
equipment.
Tips for using bubble wrap and packing paper
- Don't skimp on packing supplies.
- Use household
items in place of bubble wrap and packing popcorn when possible.
- Wrap furniture with blankets.
- Newspaper can leave smudges on some items; you
can purchase plain newsprint paper to avoid this, or always wrap items in
paper towels or linens first.
- Envelopes or plastic sandwich bags can be used
for small odds and ends.
Get Packing
- Start packing as soon as you find out you’re
moving to avoid last minute stress.
- Pack items first that you don't use very often.
- Separate breakables and non-breakables.
- Keep the weight of each box down to a manageable
level by packing heavy items, such as books, in smaller boxes. And lighter
items in larger boxes.
- Place heavy items at the bottom and light items
on top.
- Pack one room at a time and keep boxes from the
same room together for easier unpacking.
- List contents and room on the outside of the
carton. Don't forget to label breakables as "Fragile".
- Write “Open First” on cartons containing
essential items such as cooking utensils, toiletries, etc.
- Place nuts and screws in envelopes or plastic
sandwich bags and label them.
- Pack extra linens, pillows and stuffed animals
in large garbage bags and tape closed. Plan to use these bags as cushions
or fillers in your truck.
Tricks of the Trade
- Whenever possible, use the original shipping
boxes for electronic items.
- Leave lightweight linens and clothing in drawers.
- Don’t use tape on wood or painted surfaces.
- Remove legs from furniture if possible.
- Tape electrical cords to back of appliances to
prevent damage.
- Carefully
dispose of the gasoline and oil from your machinery, and remove any flammable or poisonous household products.
