Phoenix

This phenomenal city spans more 2,000 square miles and has national sports teams, top-of-the-line golf courses and famous museums. Incorporating the communities of Mesa, Tempe and Scottsdale, Phoenix is a sprawling city that boasts of more than 300 days of sunshine every year. Summers can be boiling hot, but winter months are the perfect level of warmth. With enough activities to satisfy the whole family, this desert city is a veritable mecca of recreational opportunities.

History of the Area

As early as 300 BC, the Hohokam people moved into the Phoenix area and created a complex system of canals for irrigation. They lived in the area until about 1450 AD, when they mysteriously disappeared. It is believed that a period of drought and severe floods ultimately led to their abandonment of the canals.

In the 17th century, father Fusebio Kino became one of the first Europeans to visit the area and founded the Spanish mission of Pima. After this, Europeans would not inhabit the area until the 1860s. In 1863, the mining town of Wickensburg was set up as the first town in Maricopa County. Phoenix began under the watchful eye of Jack Swilling, a Confederate veteran from the Civil War. Swilling saw the potential the area had for farming and redeveloped the old Hohokam canals. Born out of the remains of an old civilization, they chose to call the city “Phoenix”.

In 1912, President William Howard Taft declared Phoenix the capital of Arizona. It gradually became the central distribution center for goods in the area. Today, it hosts the Arizona State Fair and is home to the Phoenix Suns NBA franchise. From desert outpost to modern metropolis, Phoenix has become the second-fastest-growing metropolitan area in the entire United States.

The daughter still lives at the house and allows people to stop by for tours. Call ahead to check and make sure it is still open—as Mary Lou ages, she takes more time off for her health.
