Seattle -- City Guide
Life in Seattle...
If you’re relocating to Seattle, Washington, get ready to enjoy one laid-back town. Located along the waters of the Puget Sound and Lake Washington, residents can appreciate the outdoors and miles of beautiful scenery. Sometimes referred to as the “rainy city”, its grey skies help give this city its relaxing, easy-going feel.
Seattle is famous for its great coffee. As many know, Seattle is the official home and birthplace to the coffee giant, Starbucks. The very first Starbucks was built in Seattle in Pike Place Market in 1971, and is still open today with its original store front. In a town with a coffee shop on nearly every street corner, residents of Seattle have a hard time choosing their favorite coffee roaster. Other coffee companies making an impact in the coffee capital include Seattle’s Best Coffee, Tully’s, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Uptown Espresso, Victrola Coffee Roasters, and Zoka Coffee Roasters. The coffee choices are endless, and you’ll need some time as a new resident to find your favorite. But then again, when you live in coffee town, there’s really no need to choose! One of the Healthiest Cities in the U.S.
According to the 2011 American Fitness Index Report, Seattle is one of the top ten healthiest cities in the United States. What makes a city healthy? Factors include how often the city’s residents exercise and the availability & proximity of local parks or recreational facilities.
Seattle caters to individuals with an active, healthy lifestyle. Its residents enjoy easy access to walking routes, bicycle paths, tennis courts, and fitness facilities. Without a harsh winter to interrupt their routine, residents get to participate in these outdoor activities year round. The city’s unique landscape of ocean and mountains creates a varying terrain, making it ideal for hiking and cycling. One of Seattle’s best spots for hikers is Carkeek Park, which provides over 216 acres of inviting trails. The best places for walking and jogging are the miles of paths surrounding the beautiful white sands of Alki Beach.
Where To Eat
Many Seattle residents agree that some of the freshest and best tasting food in Seattle comes from their farmers markets, where they can buy directly from the local farmers. Seattle’s most famous farmers market is Pike Place Market, which was started by eight farmers in 1907. Today, you’ll find it as a well developed farmers market, home to over 200 producers who sell their specialty goods all throughout the year. Only at Pike Place Market can you buy fresh organic fruit and gourmet jams directly from Johnson Berry Farm; or a warm, freshly baked pumpkin cookie from Cinnamon Works.
A city surrounded by water, Seattle has reason to boast of the superior seafood it offers. Its restaurants serve the freshest and finest seafood along its boat-filled bays. Elliott’s Oyster House is located on Pier 56 and serves over thirty different varieties of its famous oysters. Or there’s Salty’s on Alki Beach, with a location as impressive as the seafood it serves. Salty’s displays an optimal view of Alki Beach, adorned by the downtown Seattle Skyline.
And if your appetite for seafood still isn’t quenched, then The Crab Pot will ultimately satisfy the hungriest seafood lover. They are famous for their “Seafeasts”, an over flowing bucket of shrimp, fish, clams, and whatever else you crave. Just be sure to wear one of the bibs they offer, as digging into your seafood bucket will get messy!
The first inhabitants of the area surrounding Seattle were the Duwamish Native Americans. In 1851, a group of European settlers, known as the Denny Party, moved into the area and established a village that they named “Seattle”, in honor of Chief Seattle, the leader of the Duwamish tribe. Today, the original village that the Denny Party created is known as the Historic Pioneer Square. Its original buildings were all burned in The Great Seattle Fire of 1889, but were re-built shortly after. When you visit Historic Pioneer Square, we recommend that you take the underground tour to view the original town. Some of the original storefronts and roads were pushed below ground during the re-building process. These winding passageways below the grounds of the city tell an impressive story of Seattle’s past.
Seattle Places Your Family Will Love
Seattle is a great city for families, offering a variety of places that are fun for the whole family to visit. One of the most popular attractions for kids and parents alike, is The Seattle Aquarium, with an abundance of underwater exhibits and marine education.
The Seattle Center is also a place that your family will want to visit frequently. Built in 1962 for the World’s State Fair, the Seattle Center offers restaurants, shopping, parks, and entertainment. 605 feet high above the Seattle Center, is the famous Space Needle. From the Needle’s observation deck, your family will enjoy the most beautiful 360 degree view of your new hometown. Once you’re back on ground level of the Seattle Center, you’ll want to be sure to take your kids to check out the skate parks, the movies at the mural, the Children’s Museum, and the Pacific Science Center.
