U-Haul® Reviews
I requested a four-day rental, which is 96 hours. I arrived on a Thursday, so I was due back on Monday. When I returned the truck, I was charged for an extra day. On top of that, I received an email saying I still had $150 left to pay and that if I didn't pay, I'd be sent straight to collections. Not to mention the fact that the engine was running a bit rough and wouldn't start for one day. How do you expect me to evaluate all of this positively?
We used a 26 foot Uhaul truck. It worked great and was easy to drive as I have almost no experience driving a large moving truck. My only small complaint is the fuel gauge was only at 3/8ths full when I picked up the truck, so we had to get gas on drive to our new residence which was right over 100 miles away.
The truck was clean and comfortable. The car transport trailer worked very well for a one way move of 450 miles. U-Haul accommodated my rush requests when PODS called at delivery time to let me know they were unable to deliver but would bring a pod to me 1 week late. My only complaint was the length of time it took for paperwork and that the headlights on new truck do not strike high enough to read street signs at night.
3/5 Stars – Great Employees, Poor Systems We rented a 26ft truck with a 12ft enclosed trailer and 6 dozen moving blankets. The equipment got the job done, but the overall experience was rough—mainly due to U-Haul’s internal systems, not the people. Despite arriving only an hour late due to weather, the trailer had already been reassigned. The lone U-Haul rep on site had to manually rework the reservation and personally guide me—while soaking wet in the rain—as I backed the truck up to the trailer myself. He was juggling multiple customers and a hitch install at the same time. During the light check, we found the trailer’s running lights weren’t working due to a broken wire. Again, the rep did everything he could to help, eventually sending me to another location. That second location couldn’t process a trailer swap in the system but managed to repair the wiring—again, great people, limited by U-Haul’s outdated processes. The trailer also lacked a built-in jack, which made it difficult to detach for loading (luckily I had my own). Drop-off wasn’t smooth either. The mobile app wouldn’t load at the return site, likely due to weak signal, and wouldn’t accept required photo uploads. I left a note and dropped the keys. Thankfully, the team there checked it in the next day without issue. Bottom line: Every employee we interacted with went above and beyond. The problem is U-Haul’s systems, policies, and staffing—not the people.
No issues renting or driving the 20 foot Uhaul truck, though I didn't expect to get charged a mileage fee on top of the rental charge. Easy checkin and return. Filled it with gas prior to return. It says that the 20ft truck fits for a 2 bed house but it didn't quite fit everything I needed it to (going into a 2 bed apartment), so would suggest going up in size if questioning.
Nothing with the rental went well. Company changed pick up location without communicating. Since we didn't have a car, we waited 45 minutes for a Uber to take us to another UHaul location. This location was a run-down store, sharing a space with a very, very old market. This UHaul location had no packing supplies, very dirty and unfriendly. No one offered any support related to the change of locations or fact that they had no supplies. We had to then go back to the first location for boxes and packing materials after we told that the 2nd location would have all the supplies we needed. Then, they changed the final drop off location, to an area that wasn't convenient. Not a good experience!
DO NOT USE THE COMPANY!!! They were 2 hours late to begin the horror! They sent a 23 and 26 year old inexperienced worker both of which are the owners children. I hired 3 workers, but only 2 of three could do heavy lifting. Because of their inexperience they were unable to get my 2 bedrooms, 2 sofas, dining table, office furniture and boxes into a 26 foot truck which can handle 5 bedrooms and more. Because they were unable to get all my items on the truck 2 trips were made. My old address and new address are an hour away from each other. My items were damaged and poorly handled. One of my end tables was left on the truck. After I contacted them about it, they delivered it late last night outside face down broken outside my neighbor’s garage. Be mindful it was a glass table. No one notified me of the delivery and I found out when my neighbor asked if the item was mine. The entire horrific move took 12 hours bc of the careless and unprofessional workers. Because of their poor service they charged me additional time. I’ve had the same items packed before in 26 ft truck and they all fit. I should not be penalized for incompetent workers. Do not use this company!
Reserving my 26-ft truck was easy. Pickup was very easy as employees were very pleasant and helpful. I even purchased some extra items there like a flat screen TV moving box and some extra bubble wrap. Truck was in good shape and seemed fairly new (maybe 44K miles or so on it). It drove easy once I got used to it and had USB charging ports which were critical for maps and directions from my cell phone. Return was fairly quick and easy and they even refunded me for a couple boxes of unused/unopened bubble wrap. I initially reserved a truck with Budget but when I called to confirm that it would be ready at the agreed upon pickup time, they told me they would not have the truck until almost 3-hrs later that I reserved. I then cancelled with Budget and went with Uhaul. So glad I did. Uhaul delivered what they promised.
