U-Haul® Reviews
UHaul told me I only needed a 15' truck and I should have rented a 20'. As a result, I have to store stuff in my old city and rent a truck to drive 8 hours one-way to pick up the stuff and drive back another 8 hours. They also told me I didn't need the 4 dz. furniture pads that I ordered and would only give me 2 dz. and the movers ran out of furniture pads half way through the move. If you know what you want, don't let an employee at UHaul intimidate you in to something they think you need. This is ending up costing me way more than what it needed to.
I picked U-Haul because they have a large network and I've used them in the past. I had to spend an hour on the phone a couple days before pick-up to actually get everything confirmed, despite having a reservation for weeks in advance. Upon pick-up, reserved equipment was also missing from the truck, so I had to spend some extra time getting that sorted out with the front desk. Despite those annoyances, the truck was in great shape and easy to drive. Air conditioning kept up during long drives in a heat wave. Drop-off was easy. I will definitely consider U-Haul again in the future.
The reservation process was fine and the truck and vehicle transport were of fine quality. Everything else was TERRIBLE. My vehicle and transport were each 45 minutes away from my move location in OPPOSITE directions. Then they upgraded me to a gigantic 26' truck plus the trailer, which was a beast to drive. To their credit, they did give me complimentary miles to offset the craziness of picking up the equipment. But THEN I had to spend an hour trying to pick up the truck--which felt like the worst escape room ever--because the location was in BFE and their call center was bogged down from high call volumes. Luckily my movers were still able to help. Then I had to get to the other location in time to get my auto transport before they closed. All the while UHaul is /calling/ me multiple times to remind me that I have to get the trailer before noon. Yeesh. That only gave me a little over an hour to move everything. When I arrived at the second location, the trailer was stashed in the back where the massive truck couldn't get to. Thank goodness the owner was willing to come in on HIS DAY OFF to help out. Finally, the return location was backed up and I had to wait an additional 40 minutes to drop off my keys. It was a mess from beginning to end. I may have saved money but it was the worst moving experience I have ever had.
One day prior to picking up the rental, Uhaul called to say that there were no auto transports available at my location. I had to drive 100 miles round trip a day prior to pick up the transport, then the next day (My original pick up day) the original site had two transports returned. I wouldn't have to have wasted three hours and $50+ in gas if they had a system to let sites know what was coming in.
It's difficult to rate but began with having to book an auto transport and a truck separately which was very inconvenient. Doing a one way rental also seemed inconsistent among employees. I couldn't get any information about overnight parking although I called several locations and the general customer service number. I ended up having to pay extra for parking because of this instead of the standard uhaul fee. If I could rate Illinois locations separately, Morton uhaul 5/5, East Peoria uhaul 3/5, Avondale uhaul 1/5
Truck had almost 80K miles and a tire out of balance on the back...made it a bit of an annoying ride. Don't expect anywhere close to the 12 MPG they claim on the website, I averaged 8.5 - 9.5 MPG depending on the state I purchased the fuel, the truck is a gas hog, no real issues...just be prepared for a 200 dollar fill up every 375-385 miles.
We drove a 20' Uhaul half way across the country towing a car with a 60lb dog in the middle seat. I can't say it was the most fun experience, but it was much cheaper to the other alternatives. The truck got around 7.3 mpg and had difficulties with inclines along I80. I would recommend getting the 26' truck as it has a larger engine in it which might have helped make things easier.
