1-800-PACK-RAT® Reviews
I had a very pleasant experience with PACK RAT. The delivery/pick-up of my container both to my departure point and my final destination was a breeze. There were no hidden fees like these other companies and the guys who delivered/picked-up the containers were professional and timely. They all called within enough notice so I was prepared. I've never used shipping containers before so I was very pleased with this experience. Everything (gas, mileage, equipment, lock, etc.) was included in my quote. I had my container delivered to my destination within a week of pickup so that increased the price just a bit but that was okay. I would definitely recommend 1-800-PACK-RAT to anyone who's looking for a fast and efficient service.
Was referred to them and not sure if I would use again. I was unable to contact sales rep like I was told I could. The direct extension never worked. The rep never returned 4-5 phone messages. Did not receive the moving pads in my containers that were charged to me. When I called the morning of my move, while the movers were on the clock under my credit card, I was told that research had to be done to see if I ordered the pads and Pack Rat would get back to me. Meanwhile, time was ticking. The containers so far seem to be useful, but I probably need another change to give a review AFTER I move into the final home
Stay away form 1-800-Packrat!!! We gave away, donated, sold or threw out a large amount of items in the months prior to our move from Massachusetts to the Los Angeles County area. Pricing with this company is not uniform; nor is it revealed on their website. The use slick sales techniques and pricing seems to be based more on whim and negotiation; i.e. whatever they can get away with. We negotiated what we felt was a fair price for a cross-country move with 3 months of onsite container storage (monthly storage time starts the day of drop-off and ends at pickup at your destination) be aware of the timing! The container was dropped off the next day after arrangements were made; it was in good and clean condition. The container was just large enough to hold our entire household of items; including some outside stuff. Most of the initial customer interactions with the company were OK; but there were several problems with billing and delivery that prevent me from being able to recommend them. They were not very accommodating at drop-off time at the destination in terms of a specific time...they were only willing to do last drop-off of the day. Early in the morning the day of drop-off as I was leaving for work the driver called to ask if I was ready for the drop-off; even though the corporate office had arranged for me to have the last drop-off of the day with the local location (Van Nuys, CA). I asked how soon he would be at my home. His estimate was way off and he did not show up until about 1 and ½ hours after he should have arrived; there were no traffic issues that caused the delay. After unloading the container the next day I called for pickup; they could not pickup that day (Saturday) as they claim they are often able to do...they were overbooked. They could not promise a pickup as the first pickup of the day or last pickup of the day during the week; they would only say either before 1 pm or after 1 pm. I could not take any more time off from work and had to schedule the pickup for the following Saturday. There were also huge billing problems; supposedly due to they way the salesman had quoted the job; we were presented with an all inclusive quote of 3 months of container rental and delivery. We had paid a $500 deposit and monthly charges each month. At pickup of the loaded container our credit card was over-billed by over $500 (which they initially claimed were fuel charges...during a time of declining gasoline prices); also the monthly rental charges, that they bill separately for were not accounted for in the final charge. We had to spend hours on the telephone with a number of reps and supervisors to straighten out the issue. Ultimately we were billed the quoted price for the job; but it was not without a hugh amount of time on the telephone to get them the correct the issue.
Only moved part of the contents of our home. The company stayed in touch with us before the move, confirming date/time and again verifying the arrival time the day before the delivery at the "front end." They originally indicated the container would be picked up after lunch on the scheduled day; they arrived at 9am. I pointed out the confirmed time to the driver, and he left and came back at the appointed time. On the "back end" they showed up right on time. An excellent job all around.
This was a very slick process. The two containers arrived as expected the day before the movers. The movers arrived on time and everything was loaded in the time allowed. The containers were picked up the next day. The PackRat driver, Oscar was outstanding. Having never used this process, I was nervous. He answered all my questions and put me at ease. This process was easy and I would definitely do this again. I like that my property will not be unloaded until it arrives at my next destination and I unlock the container with my key!
This review would've been excellent – excellent communication excellent service excellent price - except for two things. The first was that the pod was Weighed, it came in over 8000 pounds. and at first the driver was not going to take it. Then he told us that it would cost $1000 to go over 8000 pounds. Our question is: how would the user possibly know how much the pod weighed? We didn't have a piano or any extra heavy stuff. We did have a lot of books. It should have been a more upfront notice. The driver noted that that was the 3rd pick up that week which had been over. He called the company and they gave us 15 minutes to unpack 800 pounds worth of stuff. This made us unhappy as The loaders had spent a good half hour making sure that everything was securely fastened. The driver was very nice and assisted us but nonetheless a box of wine fell and was broken. In our haste. Second is that The agent who spoke to us on the phone apparently ordered an expedited service and added that to our bill but it was not reflected in our invoice. So we were charged more on the credi card. however a quick call to billing got that situation taken care of and I applaud 1800packrat for their politeness in the procedure.
The drivers that deliver the container were courteous and professional. The customer service experience breaks down at the Pack Rat corporate offices. You need to be very clear in what you are asking them and listen carefully to their answers as I felt the delivery time window was misrepresented to me. As a result I paid for two hours of Labor and had them sitting on their duffs waiting for the opportunity to work.
They were prompt in delivering two 16' containers....their communication was exceptional. The only improvement I would suggest is to have the containers swept out and mopped before delivery. Both containers were equally dirty and dusty upon arrival. I swept and mopped each container before loading and packing my property for shipment. Since my property was/is going to be sitting in these containers for a minimum of a year while we sell and build our next home, I wanted to feel confident that my belongings are in a safe and clean environment. Other than that, the process was new to me, but for sure would recommend PACK RAT containers again and again to family and friends.
Used PackRat for a long distance move from northern VA to NC. Because of closing schedules, we had a 3 week gap between loading in VA and unloading in NC, so the included 1 month of storage was perfect. Two containers delivered on time (at both ends). They were very large and easy to load. Be sure to pack the containers tight and use tie-downs to keep your things secure for travel. The drivers in both DC and NC were very friendly, and they were helpful in getting the containers optimally oriented in the driveway. We chose PackRat because of the large container size and relatively low cost vs. competitors. Would definitely use again.
Dismissive of the size of the load thereby allowing an overload situation by over 4000 lbs. This "oops" basically doubled the cost of the move and quadrupled the stress in the final 24 hrs to closing the sale of my home. Do not use PackRat if anywhere near a full load. A single 26 ft truck would have been my better option at half my final cost to a cross country move. According to the first driver that attempted the pickup, this is not unusual regardless what corporate may say.
