Penske® Reviews
I rented the 22 foot truck online and when I went to pick it up and saw how big it was, I had a panic attack! I could not picture my little 60+ y/o self driving it all the way across the country. But I said a prayer and climbed up in the truck and had the best trip of my life. This truck is VERY comfortable and easy to handle. I drove it about 3,000 miles from Northern California to Texas and then up to Michigan. I pulled a trailer behind it with my SUV on it and I was able to handle it just fine on all kinds of roads and highways. Made it through the Grapevine and over 20 hours of driving in pouring rain. My only complaint is the poor quality of the packing blankets that I rented. Terrible! Thanks Penske!
We booked a truck/hand truck/furniture pads on their website 10 days before our moving date. We showed up on time at the office to pick up our rental truck but we were told that they might not have a hand truck for us. We definitely needed a hand truck to move our big furniture so we asked if he could check and see around to find one for us, besides the paperwork showed our reservation details with a hand truck too. The guy was so rude and he told us that he just moved his own furniture without using a hand truck yesterday with no problem so it shouldn’t be a big deal for us, or we could buy one at a Home Depot. When we told him that they should have told us about it ahead of time so that we could have planned accordingly, then he got mad at us and took out the furniture pads from our rental truck which we also had booked and paid. He told us that he wouldn’t give us the pads because we got an attitude, which was not true. I literally had to beg him for the pads and then he gave them back to us. We ended up taking extra 1.5 hours to find a Penske office in town who has a hand truck available for us and driving to the office location. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE experience with #Penske.
26 foot truck was fine Handled the hills in PA, W Va and Va pretty well although it might have been nice to get a little coaching on the gears and if or when they needed to be used outside of main Drive. The customer service folks were very good on the ordering end as were the check in/out people I WOULD USE PENSKE AGAIN AND IN FACT WILL.
I expected to pick up a truck the day of my move, and had hired movers to come within the hour of me picking up my truck. There ended up not being a truck available from Penske that morning after all. They called me to let me know they were working on it, and I got updates for the next few hours as they tried to get a truck available. Another renter had failed to bring back their truck. It was stressful and a hassle, but their customer service is what saved the day. I was impressed with Drew in Denver. He communicated efficiently with me and even had a truck delivered to my home when it became available instead of us needing to drive to pick the truck up ourselves. We got a discount because of the extra costs we faced having to reschedule movers due to the truck not being available. I don't usually buy all of the extra insurance, but it was nice to know that no more out of pocket costs would be coming my way because I paid a little out ahead of time.
Lousy truck. Penske gave us a brand new 26 foot International truck with a Cummins diesel engine. Unfortunately, somebody forgot to install a turbo charger on this engine. On the Grapevine, for example, I had 18 wheeler's with enormous loads blowing past me. We lost countless hours traversing over the Grapevine and Siskiyou range. Perhaps the most alarming aspect of this truck was the total lack of a manual override on the automatic transmission which lacked any ability to select gears for going down the steep grades we encountered. I could barely put up with the truck's lackluster performance going up grades, but without the ability to select lower gear ranges for the downhill stretches, it became positively life-threatening.
I rented a 26 foot truck from Budget, and again a few days later a 26 foot truck from Penske and drove myself from Florida to Atlanta and moved at first all my boxes etc. and the second time all the furniture. Hired twice helpers to load and unload the truck. Much better and cheaper than all the expensive moving companies ( and not so complicated )
We had a 26 foot truck. It was in great shape and worked well except it really struggled going up the passes (and we were only about 2/3 full with not a ton of heavy stuff). Was comfortable for that long of a ride. Customer service at pick-up and drop-off was great. Overall a really good experience. I recommend getting a quote online and then wait for them to call you to commit - the price came down significantly.
We would have given Penske 5 stars...because we like the trucks. But our reserved truck was not ready when they said it would be...and the car carrier had a BALD tire! We called a couple of times before a person came out to change it before we headed out on a cross-country trip. I dread to think of what could have happened had we not noticed it!!
Penske is the most economical way I've found to move your stuff when you have a lot of stuff. Their trucks are large and economical, especially when you have to return the truck in a different city. Booking is super easy online, and they have promotions and coupons throughout the year. The check-in and check-out process are straight-forward (although a bit time consuming). The only downside is that not all trucks are picked up/dropped off at actual Penske locations, but at partner companies like hardware stores or storage rentals. It is in those places that check-in might take longer than most, because they are also attending to their other customers. So when you make your reservation, try to stick to Penske locations if possible! It will make things much easier.
Picked up truck at a local Home Depot on a Saturday morning, so they were extremely busy and there were issues with my truck arriving on time and subsequently being assigned to another customer. Took a while to get everything worked out and never got the hand truck and blankets I requested, but the truck itself was excellent - relatively new and easy to operate with no issues. Penske did call me and adjust my rate for the inconvenience. Return was easy.
First truck had a high pitched whistling noise that i did not feel comfortable driving for 12 hours. The Penske desk was understanding and found a replacement truck 30min away which they left out given it was after hours. The second truck was much newer and nicer. I give 4 stars due to the first truck being older and some kind of belt issue (I think), but I would give 5 stars for customer service
Several things wrong with this rental (picked up at Z Tech in Naperville): I purchased furniture blankets when I reserved the truck. When I arrived to pick up the truck, they said "they were out". I asked how soon they could get some, they said "tomorrow". Very poor. Second the inside of the truck (in the cab) was very dirty. Floor mats muddy, etc. Next, I found out on the road that the truck had no windshield washer fluid. Why would you rent a truck to someone in the upper midwest in winter with no WW fluid. And as a last insult, I returned the truck less than full and was told the charge for gas was $8 dollars per gallon. Again - EIGHT DOLLARS PER GALLON!!!
