1-800-PACK-RAT® Reviews
The initial pick up in Austin was great. They said they would be there at a certain time and they were. Then things went south. The driver in California didn't return any of my calls, and the people at packrat didn't notify me that I might need a permit until three days before the truck arrived and the city needs five days. In the end, I didn't need the permit because putting a pod on the street is 100% illegal in Los Angeles and the lady at pack rat later told me that everyone who works there knows that and it should have been the first thing I was told. It was a nightmare. Also, the driver was over 2.5 hours late on the day of the delivery and if I didn't pester him to give me a time I doubt he would've called. He had a bad attitude when he got there and left without asking me to sign any paperwork.
They were amazing at helping us get our stuff from California and to Texas. I originally only ordered one 16 foot unit and realized we needed another and they quickly set that up for us. They were timely for drop off and pick up and were willing to accommodate us when we needed to change dates for pick up and drop off. They sent me an email letting me know that our units arrived in their temperature/humid controlled facility in Houston. I love the fact that the price included a 30 day rental whether it was on our driveway or in their storage facility. At drop off, when we opened the unit there was very little shift of the boxes (we didn't secure boxes as well as we should so that is our fault. Ive seen many reviews for various companies blaming them for broke items but if you don't pack it right that is your fault). I would use them again if I ever move.
The Pack Rat people were very easy to deal with. We used three containers, and had them stored for about two months while our new home was completed. On both ends of the move, everything went very well. We staggered the delivery and pick up of the containers (one, then two at once). The drivers were careful of the container and the surroundings (yard, trees, etc.). So far, everything we have unpacked is in excellent condition. I would recommend Pack Rats for a move.
We needed three 16' containers for our things to move from Connecticut to Boston. The trailers were is excellent functional and cosmetic shape. The drivers, manager at the New Haven, CT facility, and customer service rep. were very helpful and accommodating. In the end, probably the most flexible and cost-effective move we've done that required some storage for a few weeks. Definitely would use them again.
Our metal PackRat storage unit was clean and in excellent shape. Delivery drivers for each leg of our long-distance move were on-time, polite, knowledgeable & competent. Customer service reps were also polite, and tried to be helpful; but this area of the operation is in desperate need of logistical restructuring & training. We had to change our final delivery date because of changes in our move schedule, and what should have been handled through a single, 10-minute phone call turned into days & weeks of multiple convoluted chains of follow-up conversations w/many different CSRs who attempted to fix a series of mistakes that occurred on their end. If my husband & I had not been so doggedly persistent in our record-keeping, online account checking and follow-through, we still would not have our items (which we eventually received 3 weeks later than our original target date), and we also would have been overcharged by an additional $270 for another month's rent. There were huge inconsistencies in booking procedures for deliveries and pick-ups, with explanations of rules varying wildly from one CSR to another. Even after we thought some of the scheduling problems had been resolved, we would log into our online PackRat account only to find that changes had been made without our authorization or even with any communication to us about the change. It was a maddening experience that will prohibit us from ever booking this company again for our future moves -- in spite of the excellent condition of their storage unit and the excellent service we received from other branches of their operation.
I used three 16' containers from 1800PackRat and am really happy with the choice. I had a terrible experience with a mover a few years back - especially when a whole bunch of my stuff "vanished" in transit. This time around I wanted much tighter control of the process. I like the idea that you get a container, load it as you like, control what goes in - AND LOCK IT - where you're the only one with the key. I shopped pretty aggressively and narrowed down choices to PODS, UHaul, and 1800PackRat. PODS was insanely expensive compared to everyone else. You pay for the marketing they do. And they don't have full metal containers that are weather proof. They're just weather "resistant." Pass. Uhaul was these all-wood things that just felt less secure. Pricing was middle of the pack. 1800PackRat had the best combo of features - full steel container that's weather proof, they give you a lock, they don't have all these random fees, and the price was lowest by far. And i learned along the way that a critical advantage was that PackRat containers can handle 2000 pounds more than the other guys. You don't appreciate the value of this until you're loading a container and realize you've only filled it up half-way and you've maxed out the weight limit. Game changer. And lastly, the truck crew for PackRat was awesome. Dion... if you're reading this, you're the man! Can not thank you enough for all the accommodations and ability to make stuff happen.
The 16 ft. container was exactly the right size for our move. The container showed some sign of wear and tear on the exterior but this had no effect on the space used to hold our stuff. We chose this company because our neighbors (who had used them two years ago) recommended them. Assuming all goes well on the trip from Colorado to Florida, and assuming our goods survive the trip we will certainly recommend 1-800 Pack Rat to our friends.
We had a HORRIBLE experience with 1-800-Pack-Rat. They tried to overcharge us over $1000. When I demanded an itemized listing of what the charges were for, they conveniently said it was a system glitch. Their phone lines are busy for hours and hours, they don't return phone calls or emails. When I complained about the lack of communication, they said it was a busy time of year. Then they confirmed our moving date, then changed it after I had hired movers and said there was nothing they could do because it was summer and they were busy. We went without our belongings for a week. I will NEVER recommend or use them again and I gave them 1 star only because 0 stars was not an option.
Everthing would have been 5 star except....They literally dumped our container on it's side in the warehouse and then had to flip it back over. The container was so damaged, they hired movers to put our stuff in another unit. We are still digging through the aftermath to make a claim to their insurance. We are told that without receipts, items are depreciated out 7-10% per year for 7 years. So, for example if I can prove replacement value (of common houshold goods since they don't insure anything preciouse, antique, etc.) like my curio is $1000, I will be lucky to get $300 from them to replace it. Damaged family photos from shards of broken glass are irreplacable. I would spend weeks documenting and researching every little thing that's destroyed. This has been a nightmare and an incredible loss.
