First, they called to make sure of where they were to pickup my furniture.
Second, they arrived on time.
Third, the fellow loading the van had an eye for packing the truck.
Fourth, they moved rapidly and got my stuff unloaded quickly.

They broke the first piece of furniture moved. We then had a little chat and things seemed smoother after that... My question is, who's going to pay for the damage?

Unfortunately when a customer is on a time crunch and insists on having themselves or other people "help," we cannot be liable for any of the items that anyone other than our team had their hands on. Also, this being an unload, any furniture items that are highly valuable or fragile, we would expect to be wrapped or covered during the loading process in order to protect them from any damage.
A furniture blanket would have prevented the damage to the item in question and our team is always happy to wrap/protect any items at the customer's request.
I believe you have already contacted hire a helper support to help resolve this issue.
