How to Prepare for Professional Packers
You should start preparing for professional packers at least a week before your move, even if you are not doing the packing yourself. The goal is not to box everything up early, but to make sure the crew can start packing right away when they arrive.
Before packing day, focus on sorting, decluttering, separating personal items, and confirming what the crew will and will not pack. A little prep can save hours and help prevent important items from being boxed by mistake.
What To Do Before Packers Arrive
Professional packers can work quickly, but only if they know what should be packed and what should stay out. Before they arrive, walk through your home and make the big decisions first.
Here is what to do before your packing crew arrives:
- Declutter room by room. Donate, sell, recycle, or toss anything you do not want packed.
- Use the 3-box rule. Set up boxes or bins for “keep,” “donate,” and “trash” so decisions do not pile up.
- Separate valuables and personal items. Keep jewelry, cash, passports, medications, medical records, financial documents, and sentimental items with you and tell your packers they shouldn’t be included with everything else.
- Pack an essentials bag. Set aside clothing, toiletries, chargers, medications, pet supplies, and anything else you need for the first night.
- Empty trash, remove laundry, and set aside dirty dishes. Packers may pack what is in front of them unless you set it aside.
- Clear counters and pathways. Open space makes it easier for the crew to move through your home.
- Label items that need special care. Use notes or painter’s tape on fragile items, “do not pack” areas, or rooms with special instructions.
- Confirm parking and access. Make sure the crew knows where to park and how to enter the home.
The more decisions you make before the crew arrives, the smoother packing day will feel.
What Will Packers Not Pack?
Professional packers can handle most household items, but there are some things they usually will not pack for safety, legal, or liability reasons. Always confirm the rules with your packing company before moving day, since policies can vary.
Most packers will not pack:
- Hazardous materials, including gasoline, propane, lighter fluid, paint, fireworks, ammunition, pool chemicals, and some cleaning products.
- Perishable food, especially anything refrigerated, frozen, opened, leaking, or likely to spoil.
- Plants, especially for long-distance moves or moves across state lines.
- Pets, which should always travel with you or through a proper pet transport service.
- Medication, including prescriptions, daily-use medical supplies, and anything you may need right away.
- Important documents, including passports, birth certificates, financial records, insurance papers, leases, closing documents, and medical records.
- Valuables and irreplaceable items, including jewelry, cash, heirlooms, collectibles, and sentimental keepsakes.
A good rule of thumb: if you would be upset to lose it, need it during the move, or cannot replace it easily, keep it with you.
