Unfortunately, my movers were a 16 year old and a 20 year old that the company confirmed were okay to do my job. The young men were nice enough, but I expected two grown men who knew what they were doing. They weren’t able disconnect my washing machine, nor disassemble my bed which ended up being left behind. I had to pay the custodial engineer on the property to disconnect my washing machine.
Regrettably, I have no choice, but to donate over $5000 in furniture that didn’t get moved because they didn’t know how to pack the truck, leaving it half empty with gaps throughout and did not know how to use the straps to secure the items. They bent my mattress and told me it had to stay that way to secure two chairs that were haphazardly placed on the sofa. Unfortunately, the chairs still got bruised and my mattress is now warped. They didn’t use the blankets I provided and stood my white sofa on its side on the dirty deck.
My life has been turned upside down. I was not able to clear out of my apartment on time and am forced to make multiple round trips with my car… the very thing that I wanted to avoid, as it has cost me over $50 for gas each trip and mileage on my leased vehicle that will also cost me additional money. Hire-A-Helper only offered $100, or that I have to pay them in full and then file a claim.
It has been a surreal experience and am trying to be positive, telling myself that a family in need will receive and appreciate all the very nice furniture I am being forced to donate, while having to move so much on my own has given me biceps! My learning is that my next vehicle is a truck and I will never buy another piece of furniture that I cannot move on my own, or afford to donate when I move. Mostly, I am thankful that as a single older woman without anyone to help me, I still have the health and well-being to get through this on my own. Best wishes to all and no hard feelings. Life is too short.
