The Cost of Moving Services in San Jose, CA

San Jose moving costs differ based on the type of service. Labor-only movers typically cost less because they handle loading and unloading your truck or moving container, but they don’t provide transportation.

If you'd rather someone else handle everything, full-service movers have you covered. It costs more, but they manage the loading and unloading, and provide their own truck that they’ll drive to your new place. In both cases, you can often pay for add-on services for packing and furniture assembly.

Here's how the prices compare.

This service costs an average of $87.94 per hour, but rates can vary depending on when you book your movers. Booking on lower-demand days—typically Sundays or during February—can help save you money.

Bob and his son performed a miracle when they packed our small POD. They had it packed precisely until everything fit and nothing else would have. They arrived when they said they would, communicated well, were professional and courteous AND they finished 30 minutes early! Bob and his son are a great team. I highly recommend them for loading and packing.

Great communication and the team worked super hard and finished early! Overall, it was a good experience. The team had a bit less experience with packing, e.g. using dish packs, glass packs, bubble wrap sheets, etc. than I'd expected and a few walls/pieces of furniture got dinged in the process but they were accommodating and responsive... overall, I'd definitely hire them again.

Moreover, the teamwork between the two movers was phenomenal and they skillfully loaded two large moving pods.

Pro tip: Book ahead as far as possible to get the best rates!

Tip 1: Reserve Street Parking with a Tow-Away Permit

Get a Tow-Away Permit from the City of San Jose's Department of Transportation. It lets you temporarily reserve curbside or metered parking for things like construction, events, or in this case, your move. This ensures you'll have ample space for your moving truck or moving pod.

Bonus Tip: If you're parking a storage container for longer than 72 hours during your move, you also need an Encroachment Permit from the Public Works office. You'll still need a Tow-Away Permit, but you must apply for the Encroachment Permit first.

Tip 2: Donate, Sell, or Dispose of Unwanted Items Before Your Move

The less you have to pack, the quicker and cheaper your move will be, so clear out any unwanted items ahead of time.

It’s a good idea to donate or sell anything that's in good condition, but for the items that can’t be donated—like old, stained mattresses or broken appliances—you'll need to dispose of them properly. Drop them off at your local landfill or schedule a free junk pickup. San Jose allows residents to schedule pickup for up to 12 items, but be sure to confirm which items are accepted.

Bonus Tip: Post items that are in good condition in local groups like Buy Nothing San Jose—they often get picked up quickly.

Tip 3: Avoid Driving During Rush Hour

San Jose's high population makes rush hour traffic difficult to navigate, especially if you’re driving a moving truck. Whenever possible, avoid moving during the morning commute from 7-9 am or the evening commute between 4-7 pm. Also, plan your moving day route to avoid the US 101 Corridor, Bayshore Freeway, El Camino Real, and Sunol Grade, where traffic tends to get especially bad.

Bonus Tip: Watch Bay Area traffic alerts to stay updated on real-time traffic hazards, accidents, and roadwork in the area.

Frequently Asked Moving Questions in San Jose

For the best weather and prices, we recommend moving September through November or March through May. These drier months are warm, and because they're considered off-season, movers will be flexible with their pricing and have more availability. The cheapest month to move is February, making it an ideal time to save.

When tipping movers in San Jose, a good rule of thumb is between 10-20% of the total moving cost. Since the Bay Area's cost of living is higher than most places, these percentages are just general guides— feel free to tip more if your crew goes above and beyond.

HireAHelper has been working with the highest-rated moving crews in San Jose for more than 17 years. Your movers will know all about navigating those steep hills of Alum Rock and dealing with tight downtown parking situations near San Pedro Square. They come prepared to meet any challenges your neighborhood might throw at them.

The movers on HireAHelper are no strangers to South Bay rush hour (7-10am and 3-7pm) and know when to avoid the 280/680 corridors. They'll check SAP Center events and nearby tech campuses ahead of time to plan the best route. Our San Jose teams research the best loading zones and parking spots in busy areas like downtown and Santana Row, so you can worry about one less thing.

With downtown San Jose's growing skyline, our crews handle high-rise moves all the time— from One South Market to the Metropolitan and everywhere in between. They show up prepared with all the right equipment and know the drill with building management. Just make sure you let your movers know they’re dealing with a high rise and what floor you’re on ahead of time.
