The Cost of Moving Services in Houston, TX

Full-service movers have a higher cost, but they provide a truck, load it with your stuff, drive it to your new home, and unload it for you once there.

Labor-only movers help you load and unload your packed boxes, furniture, and other items, but you're responsible for renting and driving the truck or scheduling storage container pickup and dropoff.

Either way, hiring professional movers is a literal load off your mind and your shoulders.

See how different scenarios impact moving service costs in the table below.

The Cost of Labor-Only Movers in Houston

Did you know? More than 1 out of 3 HireAHelper customers who select our labor-only moving service use the help to load or unload their PODS container.

Labor-only moving costs vary depending on what you're moving (larger, heavier items can increase the price), how much stuff you're moving, and how long it takes to get all of that onto the truck or into your storage container.

On average, labor-only movers charge $64.79 per hour.

Sunday moves are usually cheaper. Booking your move in February could save you some cash.

The Cost of a Local Full-Service Move in Houston

Full-service movers are more expensive, but that makes sense when you consider all they do. They bring the truck, drive your belongings to your new home, and load and unload everything — meaning you get to avoid the Houston heat and traffic, which is definitely worth a little extra.

On average, full-service moves cost $818.48. You can save some by booking during the least expensive month, February, or on the most affordable day, Sunday.

The first two guys were on time and worked very diligently, very impressed with them. The third guy was there for about 30 minutes at the end, supposedly working with his boss. I paid for three guys for two hours but really did not have all three for the two hours. It is not fair to the two who were there on time and did the job to get paid the same as the third guy.

HireAHelper's Moving Guide for Houston

Tip 1: Check Your Moving Route for Construction Zones

The Houston landscape constantly changes, with multiple major roads seemingly always under construction. Map out your moving route to dodge road construction to save money and time on moving day.

Being proactive can substantially reduce frustrations for everyone involved.

Bonus tip: Download the free Houston TranStar app to stay on top of road and lane closures, traffic jams, and construction as you plan your move.

Tip 2: Be Prepared for Moving in the Heat

Summer is the busiest (and most expensive) time to move, and the heat doesn’t make it any easier. You want to end moving day happily exhausted in your new home — not overheated on the sidewalk. If you have to move in peak season, plan to stay cool by following a few tips:

  • Stock a cooler with plenty of water and sports drinks for you, your family, and the movers.
  • Keep cool towels on hand to help beat the heat.
  • Plan regular shady breaks to prevent heat exhaustion.
Bonus tip: Some moving companies charge extra for working in extreme heat, so ask about additional fees before booking.

Tip 3: Get Early Details About HOA Moving Rules

When moving into communities with HOAs, make sure you're clear on parking and other rules beforehand. Some HOAs cap move-in hours or have strict rules about where to park a moving truck.

Being respectful of the rules early on can help keep the peace, plus you’ll avoid fines and that dreaded side-eye from your neighbors.

Bonus tip: Check if you need a commercial vehicle loading zone permit to park your moving truck.
