Thank you to Chucks Master movers! They did an excellent job in properly moving our things and in a timely manner that exceeded the time we thought it would take to move everything. They showed up on time and were prepared the minute they arrived. They even helped move the truck since I was not confident in backing it up in a small space without hitting other cars. They were very professional and clearly knew how to get the job done. I would recommend them to anyone and if I had to move again, I would hire them again.

The 4-man crew from Chuck's Master Movers arrived on schedule and set to work in good humor despite the day's heat, but as the morning proceeded, several very substantial issues emerged, which had consequences for which we have NOT been able to reach any resolution. Bottom line to this detailed report: we must with regret state that we definitely would NOT use this company again NOR recommend that anyone else do so. At base, we see the problems to have arisen from poor crew dynamics/personnel issues (which the company dispatcher Cheri Beasley, when I spoke to her later, readily admitted were familiar to her with that staffing!) That circumstance led to two major problems in the move--namely damage to our furniture and an unexpected need to rent another truck, neither of which problems the company has addressed even a full month after we reported them.

The first problem, evident soon after the crew's arrival, is that an inexperienced worker (who I later learned from the company's dispatcher was a part-time helper designated as a "box runner") undertook to load our rented 20-foot U-Haul. He did this after more or less pushing aside the (younger) official crew head who we quickly learned usually packs the trucks (but who was unfortunately not able to assert leadership on site--perhaps due to the part-time worker's substantially greater age and bossy personality). That crew head and the two youngest/newer workers directly voiced their discomfort with the older self-appointed packer's behavior and the job he was doing. Thus the atmosphere was considerably less professional than we expected, especially as it became evident that the unskilled packer was not getting nearly as much loaded into the truck as we (and the regular packer, as he readily admitted as an aside, criticizing his colleague) knew to be possible. As a result of that overall poor packing, we suffered both damage to our furniture AND financial loss because we ended up having to rent another U-Haul truck a few weeks later to transport between Champaign and Chicago a number of items which Chuck Masters' crew couldn't manage to fit into the 20-foot truck. (That time we got a 10-foot UHaul that we OURSELVES loaded much more efficiently, we think!)

The damage to numerous pieces of furniture (which the much more professional crew that UNLOADED our truck the next day in Chicago pointed out, clearly attributing the damage to the poor packing) resulted directly from the self-appointed "leader's" inexperience. For example, the numerous blankets and other padding materials we provided did not get placed securely in the right places to protect the furniture, especially not between wooden bookcases, most of which were damaged, as we reported in detail to the company. Some metal flashing around a "firebox" that we had wrapped well with bubble wrap was also -- and particularly badly--damaged, because the packer jammed it under a table with drawer rails that got forced out of alignment while denting the metal item.

Although we ourselves have subsequently managed to sand away or otherwise minimize many of the dings and abrasions to the wood furniture, the metal flashing must be replaced with substitute materials rather than repaired (also as no replacement parts are available). After research we've learned that such replacement will cost about $120, including professional labor. But the Chuck Masters company (which does carry baseline insurance on the load) HAS NOT RESPONDED to our request to reimburse for damages at all, although we made a damage report onJuly 12 and at Ms Beasley's invitation submitted the next day ample documentation for insurance claims. I subsequently waited patiently for ONE FULL MONTH without receiving ANY answer or contact at all from Chuck Masters.

That full month having passed, yesterday morning, Aug. 9, I called & reached the dispatcher Ms Beasley, although she was obviously driving. Still hoping in good faith that she would take my customer report seriously (as she had initially APPEARED to do in my call and texts on July 12-13, but without following up), I made the safety-conscious suggestion that she please call me back after pulling off the highway, to which she readily agreed. But neither Ms Beasley nor other company rep returned my call (nor a subsequent appeal per text to call me back).

Thus a THIRD problem, besides the poor personnel management & resultant inadequate packing job leading to damage & additional expenses, is this VERY POOR & DISRESPECTFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE. We're especially disappointed in this aspect of dealing with the company, as initially we felt confident in its professionalism due to a confirmation call & some positives we noted: all crew members worked hard & showed respect & skill in carrying the furniture & the 3 younger ones worked well together & with us. We hoped to post a more positive review but cannot since the company has taken NO responsibility for problems reported.

The guys were friendly and professional. The job was done quickly, efficiently, and safely. There was a delay on their arrival, but Cheri did a great job of keeping me updated on their anticipated new time and, actually, it provided me more time to get ready for them to move things. I appreciate her good communication on that aspect. They cheerfully moved a van load and SUV load of items (couch, shelf, ottoman, table and chairs) down many flights of stairs and loaded them carefully into the vehicles. I would definitely use them for future moves!
