The guys were awesome! Usually with paid movers they work slow and stretch the job out. These guys worked at such a great pace and unloaded the 6 hour load job in a little over an hour. I was very impressed. If you are looking for a hard working crew that won’t slack on the job, give these guys a call! Well done.

Great communication and the team worked super hard and finished early! Overall, it was a good experience. The team had a bit less experience with packing, e.g. using dish packs, glass packs, bubble wrap sheets, etc. than I'd expected and a few walls/pieces of furniture got dinged in the process but they were accommodating and responsive... overall, I'd definitely hire them again.

Jordan and Kalil were great. They reached out ahead of time, were prompt, polite, respectful and listened. Then they jumped into action. A Piano, a large exercise machine, took beds apart and packed that pod like you wouldn't believe. Still have half open. I will be having them back for part 2. Thanks guys! Susan

Very professional, hard working and experienced. They have all the right tools and materials and wrapped everything up nicely for protection. They also strapped things in the container at the end so they don’t shift. I live on the 3rd floor without an elevator, they carried everything downstairs quickly and gently, without a scratch.

Pro tip: Book ahead as far as possible to get the best rates!

Tip 1: Plan Your Move Around Oakland Traffic

Oakland’s traffic is notoriously heavy, especially along I-880, I-580, and Highway 24. To avoid major delays, schedule your movers outside of peak congestion hours—ideally before 6 am or between 10 am and 3 pm. Afternoon traffic picks up again from 3 pm to 7 pm, especially near Downtown, Uptown, and the Port of Oakland. Planning your move around these windows can save hours, money, and reduce stress.

Bonus Tip: Use real-time traffic apps like Waze or Google Maps to navigate around accidents or unexpected slowdowns on moving day.

Tip 2: Contact Utility Providers Before Moving Day

Don't move into a dark, hot home! Call utility providers at least a week before your move-in date to request electric, gas, water, and sewer services. Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) handles energy services in Oakland, and East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) offers water and sewer services.

If possible, avoid scheduling installations while movers are unloading boxes. You don’t want the chaos of too many people trying to get work done at once.

Bonus Tip: Schedule cable and internet setup in advance to avoid delays. Xfinity provides TV and streaming services as well as home security subscriptions.

Tip 3: Keep Pets Safe and Stress-Free on Moving Day

Moving day can be overwhelming for pets, with open doors, unfamiliar faces, and lots of noise. To keep your animals safe, set up a quiet room with food, water, and comfort items away from the action, or arrange for pet daycare. Oakland offers several highly rated, reputable facilities:

  • Citizen Canine: Provides personalized dog boarding and daycare services near the Oakland Airport.
  • Happy Hound: Offers comprehensive daycare, training, boarding, and spa services in Oakland.
Bonus Tip: Ensure your pet's ID tags and microchip information are up to date before moving day in case they accidentally slip out during the move.

Frequently Asked Moving Questions in Oakland

You've got moving questions — we’ve got answers. Learn what to expect when moving in Oakland.

Thursday is the cheapest day to move in Oakland. In general, weekends typically see higher demand and increased pricing. It's also a good idea to avoid holidays and the first or last days of the month.

When putting together a budget for moving in Oakland, consider the size of your household, as well as factors like the number of staircases in your home or building. That said, labor-only help with two movers for two hours typically costs around $645. Rates can also change based on the amount of heavy items (over 300 lbs) that are involved.

Yes, if you need help unpacking after your move, you can explore the movers who offer add-on services on HireAHelper’s platform. Simply select a date and enter your zip code to find the right team to assist you. You can also add packing services ahead of time for the easiest move of your life.

Getting a clear picture of the time it will take to complete your move requires you to get a good idea of the number of bedrooms, square footage, and how much stuff you have in your home.

As a general rule, a studio or 1-bedroom apartment usually takes 2-3 hours, a 2-bedroom home takes 3-4 hours, and a 3-bedroom home typically needs 4-6 hours with a standard two-person moving crew. Of course, it's always a good idea to communicate with your moving team and go over any heavy items or building features like staircases or elevators. This ensures your team is prepared to complete your move quickly.

Moving yourself is the most affordable option…on paper. Renting a truck can quickly add up with mileage charges and a strict return schedule that can slam you with fees if you’re late.

Hiring professional movers saves you time and strain, as their expertise covers everything from navigating busy streets to loading trucks efficiently so your truck isn’t overloaded or you need to take multiple trips. They're pros at handling heavy, cumbersome items up stairwells or through elevators. The time (and gas milage) you save may actually come out to be cheaper than renting a truck yourself, so be sure to check out HireAHelper’s quote tool to compare the best rates for your particular move.
