We had 3 movers; two men and a woman. This was not a difficult job - unloading a twenty foot U Haul with very little furniture. We had a couple of dressers, a makeup vanity, several night stands, to queen sized beds, and a refrigerator.
When the appointment was confirmed by Ashley she wanted to make sure we knew her movers would not leave until they get paid. I explained that we knew how the system worked since we had just used another company, through Hire A Helper in SW Florida.
The movers showed up on time. I have MS and my legs fatigue easily. The female mover came in and rudely said they needed someone out by the truck to direct them where to put items. My husband was doing that, but one of the movers called him inside to point out where rooms were located. My husband then returned outside and started directing where things go, but once again was called inside to assist. The female came inside and was rude again saying someone needed to get outside. She then made some snarky remark to one of the men.
I was inside directing the movers to the appropriate rooms. One of the movers, a very tall gentleman, was carrying several boxes at once, some going to different rooms. He would just set all the boxes down in the room marked on the top box, regardless of where the other boxes were supposed to go. I would move them to the correct room. The tall gentleman would move them when I asked him to, but seemed very out out about it.
Some boxes were marked “FRAGILE” do not stack anything on top and we found them in the bottom of a stack with heavy items on top.
Things got really awkward when we had a refrigerator that needed to go into a storage bedroom. The fridge was too wide. When I was in another room, I heard the movers talking about how it wouldn’t fit unless they took the doors off. They were in the garage and I asked if it would fit with the doors off, the female who kept calling me ma’am in a sarcastic manner, said they were not allowed to take off the doors due to liability. I said I would take them off. She then proceeded to tell me they don’t move refrigerators into bedrooms (this is a one story house - no stairs). I asked her what the difference was between that and moving a fridge into the kitchen which was a longer distance to move it than to the bedroom. She proceeded to tell me that they would not be responsible for hitting the door frame or scuffing the walls. I said it should fit with the doors off and I was willing to remove them. She then wanted to video me making a statement that we would not hold them liable for any damages, because the movers themselves get charged at least $150 for causing damages. I refused.
Finally, the third gentleman, the only polite one with any sense, came over and told me that even with the doors off, there was an area that protruded from the back of the fridge that made it a very tight squeeze. He pointed it out to me and I totally understood what he was saying. Not a problem, just push it over to the side of the garage and we will forget trying to get it in the house.
Prior to this conversation, the tall guy was still carrying multiple boxes and tubs in. He flipped one box completely over to carry it under his arm and I heard all the contents spilling and rattling inside. He was also carrying in moving bags that sort of look like duffle bags. They had handles and we used them for clothing and linens. Many of these bags were mine and went into the walk-in closet off the main bedroom. I walked in to find he had just been throwing them in a huge pile in the closet. They are stackable. He had tossed a tub with my bedroom lamps near the top of the pile and it had rolled off. I have pictures if I can upload them somewhere. I went out to mention to the female about the big pile in my closet. I figured she was the supervisor since she mostly stood around and talked without doing any work.
She became very rude. She started up with the snarky ma’am again. As we were walking back to my closet she told me, “ma’am, we are only supposed to bring things in and put them where you tell us.” I said, “Well, I don’t think that means throwing them in a pile.”
Her: “Just how do you want them ma’am?”
Me: “Not in a pile in the middle of the closet where I can’t get around them and see the label to know what’s in them.
Her: “I will stack them ma’am.” She angrily starts grabbing them and stacking them.
Her: “is this what you want ma’am?” “Does this make you happy ma’am?”
Each time the word ma’am was said with attitude.
Meanwhile the polite gentleman kindly put my bed frame together, even though it was not required (very nice and calm person).
I have used Hire a Helper movers twice before as well as other movers. We have moved6 times over past few years due to job transfers. In that time, I never had to move items myself because they were taken to the incorrect room, or to ensure fragile items were not on the bottom of a heavy stack.
