The Cost of Moving Services in Knoxville, TN

People moving in Knoxville typically have a choice between two types of moving services: full-service and labor-only. Full-service moves are more expensive, but they include loading, transportation, and unloading, making the process completely hassle-free. Labor-only movers are a more budget-friendly option. They handle the heavy lifting—loading and unloading—while you take care of the driving. Since you only pay for the help you need, you can save some money.

This table includes pricing comparisons to help you choose.

The Cost of a Local Full-Service Move in Knoxville

Full-service moving is the most hands-off option, where your moving team handles each step of your move, from the door to your old home to the front steps of your new one. That premium convenience does come at a higher cost, however, at an average of $798.79.

As with labor-only moving, you can save money by moving on Thursday or by scheduling your move for low-demand months like April.

Our guys were great! A different company had packed our container and the items were jumbled and disorganized with some things broken. The Perkins team carefully unpacked the mess and were friendly, courteous and professional as we asked them to place our items in the house.

Efficient and got the piano moved quickly and, if needed, I would use you again. But they did arrive almost a FULL HOUR BEHIND PLANNED SCHEDULE. We did get a phone call after waiting over 30 minutes, saying that they were 20 minutes out. The key problem was WE had no way to see if they were on the way.

Fantastic workers! Arrived on time and got straight to work. I hired 2 movers for 2 hours. They placed my items exactly where I asked them to, and we're especially careful with a few items that have special meanings. I would hire again. Thank you again.

These 4 men were the hardest workers I have seen. They didn’t pause in 5 hours of heavy lifting in 90 degree weather. They were courteous and went out of their way to see what we wanted and then they did it. I totally respect their work and wish I could move them with me

Jeff and Obed did a wonderful job! Things were not quite as expected - 2 guys instead of 3 and a 16 foot truck instead of 26 - but they were prepared, worked hard and took good care of my belongings. They were careful not to scratch the floors or ding the walls. I would recommend them as well as use them again.

Before I realized it was time there was a knock on the door with two serious ready to work workers. We had two flights of stairs and these two hard working men handled it like nothing. They finished in perfect time and we didnt have anything broken. I am writing this post move, nothing was broken. Thank you so much for all of your hard work.

They were kind, professional and super helpful the entire time. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Real Advice from Knoxville Movers

We asked local movers about what you should know about moving in Knoxville. (They’re really nice!)

"The Uhaul of Hendersonville has the best customer service and is very organized. They always have a truck ready to go regardless of the size. I love using Uhauls for local moving but when I am moving a customer long distance I would recommend Penske. Penske is more expensive but is a very reliable truck and is regularly maintenanced. "

Move It or Lose It Profile Image - Move It or Lose It

"If you are moving to Knoxville and looking to rent a truck, I would highly recommend Penske. Penkse always has a large fleet of trucks and moving supplies on hand. Knoxville is an easy town to navigate, even with a large moving truck, and it's a great place to live and work!"

HireAHelper's Moving Guide for Knoxville

Tip 1: Schedule a Bulk Pickup

Getting rid of bulky items saves time and money on moving day. In Knoxville, dial 311 to schedule a pickup of your larger items, which the city refers to as a "bulky alert." You can do this weekly if you need to, though you're limited to five items per pickup. The city recommends scheduling service at least 2 days in advance to make sure a vehicle is available.

Bonus Tip: If your bulky pickup falls on the same day as your regular trash pickup, set the oversized items at least 3 feet away from the garbage cans.

Tip 2: Switch Your Utilities Over Before You Move

Switching utility service to your new place is part of any residential move, and doing it early ensures you won’t arrive at a home without power or water. This process typically takes 1-2 business days in Knoxville. Contact the Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) to transfer your electric, gas, water, and wastewater services all at once. You'll need to provide your name, new address, Social Security number, and start date.

Bonus Tip: KUB might charge a $35 service fee and a $300 deposit, which you can pay online by credit or debit card.

Tip 3: Board Your Pet During the Move

Your pets need a safe place to stay during the bustle of a move so they don’t get too stressed or escape through an open door. Try boarding them for moving day at one of the many Knoxville-area kennels and pet hotels. Which one you call depends on your needs:

  • AllKreatures boards dogs and cats, with daily playtime and dog grooming as an add-on.
  • Hilltop Dog Hotel boards dogs only, with optional day boarding and overnight stays.
  • Little Lake Pet Lodge accepts more exotic domestic animals, including chickens and goats.
Bonus Tip: Ask about discounts—some boarders even offer free grooming!

Frequently Asked Moving Questions in Knoxville

You've got moving questions — we’ve got answers. Learn what to expect when moving in Knoxville.

On average, people book their movers about 13 days before moving day. If you're planning a move during a busy season—like summer or the end of the month—it’s smart to book even earlier to secure your preferred date and time.

The best storage options will offer flexible sizes, convenient locations, and easy access. West-Knox Solway Storage has various unit sizes if you're unsure of how much space you'll need. Storage Rentals of America is centrally located, perfect if you need to make quick trips to storage during your move. For larger moves, Hayfield Mini Storage (despite the name) offers spacious units for storing furniture or full households.

Yes, you'll likely need a permit—especially downtown, where parking is limited and finding a legal spot for a moving vehicle can be difficult. You can get a permit from the City of Knoxville's Transportation Engineering Division. Be sure to request your parking permit at least 30 days in advance to secure timely approval.

If you need to reschedule your move, contact your moving provider as soon as possible. Most movers are flexible, but giving a few days' notice makes it easier to adjust. Be sure to ask upfront when you book if there are any rescheduling fees, so there are no surprises if your plans change.

You can expect to pay $200-$1,000 to move a piano, though this varies greatly and depends on several factors. Larger pianos are heavier and riskier to move, which may require more lifting help and drive up the cost. If you're moving an antique or high-value piano, you might need special moving insurance—ask your provider about this when booking.
