I will NOT be hiring Ogre Man Movers again. To be fair, I'll start with the positives, but the negatives far outweigh them and get worse as the review goes on.

Positives:
Before the move, I was given helpful, cost-effective advice on moving supplies (I’ve moved many times, but not into a storage POD).

Day of move:
Even though the hire was for two movers, three showed up.

They were friendly and personable. I think they want to do a good job, but time allotments with little to no flexibility make it very difficult for them to do so.

They stayed a bit past the allotted 2 hour window without charging me extra.

They assured me I didn’t need plastic wrap which saved me money (I already wrapped my sofas and bed in plastic moving bags).

I appreciate the care taken when moving my ottoman (they wrapped a garbage bag on one of its sides to to keep it from getting dirty).

Negatives:
Before the move, I mentioned twice I needed rope and plastic wrap but was told to remind them when I received the confirmation call the day before the move. Why wouldn’t this simply be noted somewhere? The call didn’t come and I had to call the morning of the move to remind them. When I spoke to the person, he said they tried to call me, but my mobile phone showed no missed calls or voice messages.

My moving window was 11am-12pm. They arrived 12:45pm.

I spent $250 on paper moving pads because I was told I would need them for every wood, metal, or cloth item, but 1) one of the movers said he had never used them in other moves before, and 2) only about 20 of the 70 pads were used. Unfortunately, by the time I checked to see how things were being packed into the moving POD, my mattress and sofa blocked the view of everything behind it so I have no idea which items might have needed the pads, but were loaded without them.

I bought extra thick plastic covers for my furniture. When I went to inspect the inside of the POD, I discovered a big tear in the cover that was on my sectional sofa.

I read in reviews there had been delays due to managing coronavirus safety measures, but I’m not sure what that entailed because none of the three were wearing masks, and in the rush near the end, did not maintain social distance when explaining the Venmo payment I needed to make for the rope that was used.

They turned my red metal filing cabinet UPSIDE-DOWN with all of my files and papers in it. When I asked why it was sitting upside down on the pavement, broken, I was told it was the only way they could get it down the stairs. SERIOUSLY? It was a small filing cabinet, one drawer for files and one much smaller drawer above it.

It explained why my checkbook was found outside of my LOCKED cabinet and why they asked me for tape for it. They were able to put it back together and pull out the top drawer. I wish I thought to try the bottom drawer, but when I tried turning the key in it earlier to put the checkbook back (when in the breezeway outside my apartment, taped up), it wouldn’t turn. I didn’t have my key with me to try it again, and they were in a rush to get everything done and in the POD, so I won’t know the true state of it (or any of my belongings for that matter) for a month or more because I’m keeping everything in the POD while I stay with family out of state.

I have moved many times and have never had an issue with movers being able to stay the full time until a job is done and to pay extra for any time beyond what was allotted. It sounds like moves are tightly booked which doesn’t leave room for unknowns. While I am incredibly grateful they stayed a little extra past the time to try and get the rest, I don’t appreciate the carelessness with which they moved my items.

When they unhooked my washer and dryer, they didn’t inform me that they were unable to turn the water completely off. Thankfully I did a final walkthrough of my apartment before leaving as I discovered a pile of water on the floor of the laundry room with the faucet spraying water out.

I have hired movers many times. This one was the worst. I’m praying the rest of my belongings are fine, but I don’t appreciate the stress of knowing I’ll need to check things as they’re unloaded in the future to know whether damage was caused before or during the unloading.

I was going to give two stars, but after writing this review, I discovered this on their page on the HireAHelper website:

“Extra Hours
We can always stay at least 2 hours over the prebooked time.”

I hired movers so I wouldn’t have to move anything from my apartment to the POD and was prepared to pay for any overage time. Knowing they should have stayed to complete the work (and to not rush and be careless!) just adds to my frustration and disappointment with my moving experience.

Mover's response:
Hello mam, were genuinely sorry you were unsatisfied with your move, you only reserved 2 men men and got a 3rd for free a $300 value by the end of the job, and no disrespect but we never tell ANYONE they do not need blankets we have them sign waiver of liability when they do not want to provide blankets or purchase them from us, blankets cost $20/pad to purchase. You did not want to purchase more than $250 in supplies and then you signed a waiver of liability stating we are not liable for any damages because you do not have the proper supplies and refuse to purchase them. We then had you sign documentation stating you acknowledged there was a high likelihood of damage to items based upon your lack of supplies. When you called and tried to file a claim after the fact we reminded you of this and you were not happy. We do all we can to ensure satisfaction but when we flat out tell you the supplies you need to prevent damage and you decline there is not much we can do. In response to covid measures, we wear masks and gloves when doing the initial walk thru and then ask the client to stay away while we move as running 4 flights of stairs in 110 degree weather with 90% humidity with face coverings is unsafe, which is why we asked you to stay in another room while we move, and your file cabinet was not broken we disassembled the wheels as they were not stable enough to make the journey all that needs to be done is to screw them in on the other end. We are genuinely sorry you're unhappy with your move and hope that was have the opportunity to make it up to you in the future. Ogre Man Movers

They did a great job. They did take a while to get to my location because of another job but because of them taking precaution and staying safe. They did communicate with me. So it was all good. They were so friendly and nice. I’d definitely call them again if I move again. ??

The good:
Were they on time? They were on time
Were they prepared for the job? The dolly's and moving equipment was top notch step above others movers I've used, not your low end u-haul type dollies and four wheelers.
Did they work hard? They worked hard
Were they respectful of your property and goods? They took care not to damage furniture or walls.
Would you use them again? Yes I would use them again and recommend them.
Used a crew of 5 to unload two 26 foot rental trucks, they completed in four hours. Four of the Five crew members really hustled and did an outstanding job. I had some awkward and heavy items, and they were able to move them into the house and even to the second floor without any issues.
The bad
One of the five was out of shape had to take frequent breaks, and be talked to a few times by the crew lead, had a poor attitude and ran into some of his coworkers a few times while not paying attention. He ended up hurting himself before the move was over. Reading a phone going up a ramp without paying attention, saw him run into one of his coworkers because of inattention. He yanked a mattress out of the truck, without looking to see what it was holding in place, and dropped a box on the floor of the moving truck, luckily now damage. Also saw him bump his hand truck into another coworker on purpose, because he did not move out of his way fast enough. They should fire this guy before they have a workers comp claim or an insurance claim for damage, just a matter of time.

I have had issues in the past with movers I hired on the back end of a move not show up. These guys showed up on time, didn't mind my control freak tendencies about putting stuff in the storage unit, and completed the work in record time. I would totally use them again.
